Our edit of the loveliest full length mirrors

As well as being a functional item within the house, mirrors serve an important decorative purpose. Here, House & Garden rounds up the best full length mirrors available now.

Mirrors often go unappreciated. They are one of those items in the home where the old saying that you 'don't know what you've got until it's gone' really applies. If you've ever stayed in a hotel or holiday home with just one small bathroom mirror, you will know this to be true.

Mirrors are, on the one hand, functional additions to your home, improving lighting and optimising even the smallest of spaces. By placing them correctly in a room, either opposite or adjacent to a window, you can enhance the area's natural lighting. As they bounce the light around the space this is a particularly useful trick in small rooms or notoriously dark spots, such as the landing or hallway.

By doing this, they also open up the space and create an illusion of depth. Mirrors that you can angle upwards or mirrors leant against the wall will draw your attention upwards towards the ceiling rather than straight across the room. In a long, thin living room, a mirror placed above the fireplace or mantelpiece will widen the space nicely.

Yet, mirrors cannot be accused of being solely functional, as they also serve an important decorative purpose. Think of them like a picture and make sure you choose something you won't tire of glimpsing.

  • Aperture floor mirror, black, £598 from Anthropologie.
